A reflection on humour, drama, and sincerity:

I wonder if the drive towards humour is one of the reasons why we are running into occasional flare-ups of people sniping at each other. There is a broadly established style of anglophone humour that relies on cultivating a certain mean-spirited witicism. It is easy for this style of humour to accidentally slip into targeting the people around us and cause hurt or ill-feeling.

There is a gentler style of humour, revolving around sincerity and a sort of targetless absurdity that is being developed in some areas of popular culture (children's shows like Steven Universe and podcasts like MBMBAM come to mind) but it takes time and practice to cultivate a new sense of humour in yourself.

We can be both funny and kind. Humour doesn't need to be at the expense of someone or something else.
