yewtu.beVLOG #5: Establishing a GUERRILLA FOOD FOREST Pt. 1 - Earthworks & Cover CropsGuerrilla gardening refers to unsanctioned cultivation of plants on land one does not have access to - whether for legal reasons or due to any other restrictions imposed on them by social institutions. It is oftentimes employed as a form of direct action against food insecurity and mismanagement of the land. I've stumbled across some land that is very neglected and saw that it needed a steward. My aim is to help it reach its potential as a food-bearing ecological oasis in the middle of suburbia. This video covers the beginnings of a project to improve this land and create a food forest on it to feed my community. This video is the first phase of the project - constructing earthworks to capture and store water, and sowing cover crops to begin building healthy soil. I demonstrate how to build earthworks on a steep slope and inoculate cover crops with pioneer biology prior to sowing. With these techniques, I hope to begin establishing an ultra low maintenance, mostly rain-fed guerrilla food forest that produces an abundance of food and medicinal plants and is an ecological haven for native wildlife.
