#FloraIncognita is an app to identify #plants using the camera of your #smartphone. It is developed by publicly funded Max Planck Society and University Ilmenau. The German Ministry of Environment funds an additional 2.4 millions of public money for further development until 2024. The AI is trained by its users - voluntarily and unpaid. Not releasing the code as #OpenSource seems a theft of the commons, of public money and of the people. Public Money, #PublicCode !
#FloraIncognita and #PlantNet are both similar apps to identify plants via your smartphone. Both are scientific projects, funded with public money - one in Germany, one in France. They are however not #OpenSource, do not share data via Open Standards nor let reuse their trained AI models. No #DigitalSustainability, no cooperation model, no future.
Anyone here knows about an existing open source plant identification app?
@opensourcegardens @plants @avanc @c0c0bird I'm really sad to discover that aspect of the Pl@ntNet project, I must say I never asked myself about it. I'm pretty sure they used open source images from #TelaBotanica to train the AI.
Since I'm a supporter of this NGO, and I published many many pictures on this network I just feel like, robbed. 😢😞
#TelaBotanica sounds awesome! "All software and applications developed under the network are licensed under a #FOSS license. The data and documents are mainly distributed under a #CreativeCommons license. A close collaboration is established with the french-speaking botanical portal of #Wikipedia." <3
If you published on TelaBotanica, thank you very much and please keep contributing!
If you contributed to Pl@ntnet, write them, tell them your story, ask them!
@foxgloved @botaflo @plants @avanc @c0c0bird good catch, thank you for the pointer! The #iNaturalist app indeed should be fully open source under MIT license according to the repo on github and it is also mentioned on several places on the website. Weird however, this is not reflected on the google play site. Also sad to not see it packaged for @fdroidorg yet.
Anyway we will try it out and report : )
@opensourcegardens @plants @avanc @c0c0bird yeah, #TelaBotanica IS awesome 😃
It's all open licenced. I was part of the team for some years (and sadly don't have much time to follow on with it now).
I was never directly involved with PlantNet. I just knew there was (is?) an agreement with Tela so PN could use the network's pictures to train the AI.
