"greed" and capitalism

I get kinda eye rolly when people chalk up the injustices of capitalism to the "greed" of business. I guess it's a useful shorthand. If you knew someone in your life who seemed only to care about money, you'd call them greedy. But it's not like everyone who runs a business individually has a moral failing or a personality flaw. There's not an incentive to do things like pay a living wage or care for the environment in a real way. The incentive is turn the planet's resources into cash by exploiting people. That's capitalism.

For-profit medicine is incapable of considering your suffering. It isn't going to think twice about you dying if you can't buy insulin because it can't. Whether the head of a pharmaceutical company is a good person or not makes no difference. You can't run for-profit insurance in a kind, generous way. It can't be done because there's a fundamental contradiction there. Making money off sick people is fundamentally twisted.

I don't give a shit whether a CEO is a good person. Because their role in this system is to exploit me for profit. Their motivation, whether they're a nice person or a greedy asshole, is not to help me, or my community.

I am perpetually fascinated by that brief silence/blank-face every physician goes into when they make a rec. for some treatment/product and I just say, point-blank, "No, I cant afford that." Like, have they got no soul or were they ordered by the provider to not disclose that they do?

@xenophora tbh it's probably not said that often, at least not so bluntly.

I guess what it boils down to is: I know my life looks comfy but under this system it's fucking precarious. I get tired of being bashful about my understanding of that: especially in front of someone I know is genuinely well-to-do... and whose org is charging me $50 for ten minutes of their time. 馃檮
