On November 11th, France reported 86,852 new coronavirus cases – the second highest infection rate in the world that day, second only to the *entire* USA. The highest per capita.

More infections in one day than Kenya, Vietnam, Nigeria, and South Korea have reported in total. Taiwan has had only 589 confirmed cases in total during the entire pandemic. Tanzania has had no new cases at all in the past 7 days.

India is the second worst affected country after the USA, but India has a population of 1.38 billion. The USA contains only 331 million people. And yet, the USA still has the higher number of infections and roughly twice the death toll.

Rich western countries need to learn that their precious economies will not fix this. What's the point in placing such worship on your country's wealth if you can't even care for your people?

tl;dr the western world is a virussy plague land. It isn't being fixed because the people in charge are obsessed with money

Doesn't help that so many people are so fixated with their Freedom™ instead of just taking basic measures to protect others either.

Protest all you want, kid. I don't think the virus is listening.

pandemic • small correction

I didn't check all the numbers for this, and I now realise that France may not have been the highest *per capita* that day – purely because there are several smaller European countries like Belgium and Switzerland which have a disproportionately high number of infections.

@InvaderXan
A lot of folks seem to think "it's only old or brown people, so lock them up and don't bother the Holy Economy".
I'm kinda pleased that our governments care this much. Back in the Aids days, even *they* thought it was only queers, n*ggers and whores, so who cares, right?

covid-19, politics

@InvaderXan That's about the size of it. This could have been so much better, but - well, just look at the "ah, fuck it" attitude of many US Governors. Or Tories in the UK, many of whom are banding together to try to defeat any further lockdowns. (Hilariously, the talking point they're using is out of concern not /just/ for The Economy™, but people's mental health. Hands up everyone who believes that)

And yet, even now, reporting merely trundles along as usual, blithely reporting all these very important people and their very important words, seldom bothering to venture into analysis of the genocidal disdain on display, let alone wondering if we couldn't do *so much better* if the priority wasn't ensuring the richest continue to get a little richer.

covid-19, politics

@porsupah They're just so desperate to make sure their profit margins keep increasing that they'll grasp at any straws they can to just... do nothing

@InvaderXan The swedish experience is even worse because we don't really have the conflict. We just get told by the government to socially distance more but without it being enforced all that much.

pandemic • numbers • frustration

@InvaderXan Swedes be like: "Only 50 people at a venue, man that sucks, lets invite eachother into our apartments and party together instead of wasting time in dead-ass bars."

@InvaderXan Do you know of a reason France is hit that massivly?
I completely get the baseline of pandemic fuckery due to the general things you mentioned, but these are true all over the west.

Is there something France does differently?

pandemic • numbers • frustration

@Goran Pretty much all of Western Europe is similarly bad TBH.

pandemic • numbers • frustration

@InvaderXan Not really. Just like in the 1st wave there are huge differences.
To the point of Germany treating French patients.

The spectrum now is around 45k cases per 1M pop (Belgium) to 10k per 1M with (e.g. Denmark, Germany).*
France and Spain are around the US with 30k, though France has a much smaller testing ratio than the other too.

*Accumulated cases since pandemic's start. Numbers from the worldometer's page.

@Goran Given that you apparently came here just to demonstrate how much you know, I have to wonder why you bothered to ask any questions at all.

Try applying your knowledge to countries outside Europe for comparison, if you want to actually understand my point.

pandemic • numbers • frustration

@InvaderXan I asked because I do not know. And it sounded like you do.

India has much less number on records. Only working population is reporting to get off from work.

pandemic • numbers • frustration

@InvaderXan just a note, TZ is not reporting cases; there's well-founded suspicion that they do have cases.

That said, strong agree with your general point.
