Not explicitly referring to American politics, but we all know what this is about

This Tumblr post wasn’t written for mastodon, but it’s sure as hell relevant.

American election • social media fallout

What I’ve seen across the internet over the last few hours:

Instagram: videos of entire neighbourhoods cheering, people dancing, encouragement and optimism for what people need to do next

Twitter: people absolutely losing it over a press conference held in some landscaping company’s parking lot by mistake, and laughing at pictures of police crying

Tumblr: yeah, there’s still more to do, but fuck it take a moment to chill. Here’s a bunch of joke posts about it. Also, the Navajo Nation and Black organisers are amazing, please support them.

Mastodon: “WELL, ACTUALLY...”

@InvaderXan

People need to know that they can win occasionally. There needs to be time for levity.

leftist contradictions

@zzz @InvaderXan This looks like a case of people with purportedly liberatory politics internalizing the oppressive values they're fighting against, like an anarchist who forms a cult of personality, the anti-racist who thinks Blackness and indigeneity are defined by suffering and death, an anti-capitalist who has internalized a neverending work ethic of noble suffering, or the tankie who told me "Good luck defeating the U.S. without nukes."

@ljwrites @InvaderXan

One of the practices I like in organising groups is reminding people when we win. And sometimes we do win. Against the landlord, against the police, against big corporations, even locally in some places in this election.

@InvaderXan
@error_1202 and I have been talking about this a great deal this morning. We can celebrate the wins and still know the fight goes on.

Not explicitly referring to American politics, but we all know what this is about

@QueenMollyBones @error_1202 Literally no one has been saying that anything is now suddenly over or fixed. Like, even the “liberals” that people here constantly complain about aren’t saying that? People really need to stop with the straw man nonsense.

Not explicitly referring to American politics, but we all know what this is about

@InvaderXan @error_1202 Yep, This is 💯% truth.

American election • social media fallout

@InvaderXan It's fucking exhausting to see right after an emotionally draining few days (and four years of hell) :blobfrowningbig:

American election • social media fallout

@Jo Absolutely. People on this hellsite have no chill.

American election • American navel gazing

@InvaderXan I'm guessing from your time zone and toots you're in Europe. I'm getting references to the US election in a newsletter from freaking Australia.

What would you like me to know about things where you are? (Besides Covid, I think I saw those toots already.)

American election • American navel gazing

@Momerath Honestly, my point here was more that people on Mastodon have no chill and need to stop insisting that every conversation must be about how terrible everything is all of the time. It's depressing.

American election • American navel gazing

@InvaderXan true, I liked the Tumblr post you passed on. But I'm still stuck with mostly US news sources. So if there's anything I should know, or cool things, feel free to let me know. 🙂

American election • American navel gazing

@Momerath Shall do!

American election • social media fallout

@InvaderXan I wish I could share my experiences of this space with you. They're a lot more like the Tumblr ones you describe! I'm sorry you're getting the worst of it.

American election • social media fallout

@wlonk Oh, I've had plenty of good experiences here too. But in the two years I've been here, I've steadily watched more and more people leave, only to be replaced by shouty radicaler-than-thou types and banal shitposters.

American election • social media fallout

@InvaderXan Ah, no, I getcha.

re: American election • social media fallout

@InvaderXan This is probably the best argument for getting back on tumblr because holy crap, YES, the BIPOC organizers were amazing, and need our support.

re: American election • social media fallout

@InvaderXan (and also holy fuck am I sick of Mastodon opinions omfg)

re: American election • social media fallout

@alexpenclaw Me too, friend. Me too.

American election • social media fallout

@InvaderXan i've been seeing roughly the same exchange on masto and tumblr between the last two types myself

but that could be because our instance admin is pretty aggressive about keeping the trash out so i might not be seeing 90% of the bad takes you see

American election • social media fallout

@InvaderXan Yuh like we know that when people feel constantly beat down, they can't organize. They burn out.
Let people be happy.

re: American election • social media fallout

@InvaderXan thank you, I appreciate this.

Yesterday I thought something was wrong with ME because for every post about being thankful Biden won (usually by a European) there were at least 10, probably more like 15 holier than thou posts in my timeline.

I never once saw a single person who said "Yes Biden is elected the work is done" on here, but everyone seemed to be posting like it was in response to something (I hate to say this, but it REALLY felt like just trying to show that You Are the Best Leftist). I know someone who took a break from Mastodon for November knowing everyone was gonna be insufferable in regards to the election, and I was STRONGLY tempted to join them.

re: American election • social media fallout

@lapis @InvaderXan
'I never once saw a single person who said "Yes Biden is elected the work is done" on here'

same

also reminded of how happy i was for the americans when obamacare first came out

it sucks ass

but still better than what was before

and the first tangible hope that this absolute shitshow of a non-system was not immutable for all time

re: American election • social media fallout

@carcinopithecus @lapis @InvaderXan obamacare saved my life. Like it’s by no means perfect but I am indeed extremely glad that I’m actually alive to complain about it & work towards building something better

“Extremely glad that I’m alive to complain about it” is, incidentally, about my expectations for the Biden presidency

Not explicitly referring to American politics, but we all know what this is about

@InvaderXan Adding to this to say blocking someone and shitting on them for needing a break from politics, especially when they never specifically called /you/ out for anything, makes you a shitty person.

Happened to me yesterday and it's like, Mastodon is the worst form of social media except for all the other ones.

Not explicitly referring to American politics, but we all know what this is about

@InvaderXan
So right. It's not like we're paid to do this!

Not explicitly referring to American politics, but we all know what this is about

@InvaderXan hell yeah! how else can you fight the activism burnout

Not explicitly referring to American politics, but we all know what this is about

@InvaderXan The fact that trump lost still hasn't even really sunk in for me. I'll probably need a few days to process it

Not explicitly referring to American politics, but we all know what this is about

@InvaderXan I need to grind pissvortex's nose into this post, they've been nothing but a debbie downer for the past month

war metaphor

@InvaderXan one can celebrate a won battle even if the war is not over

Not explicitly referring to American politics, but we all know what this is about

@InvaderXan We didn't see this back during That Day, but that's literally the fucking mood and why we took a break on a level we've never taken one before.

Three days of explicitly avoiding anything related to the electoral system, and even today, we're still only keeping tabs of the basics purely as an information-gathering thing for potential use in activism we end up doing from outside the system.
