Welwitschia mirabilis grows in the Namib desert, sprawling along the ground. A ragged looking thing which is quietly amazing.
This is a tough plant. It can survive 5 years without water, and can live for over 2000 years. Impressive, considering it's nothing more than a woody stem, a shallow root system, and just two continuously growing leaves which split and fray with age.
It's also a traditional food source for local peoples. The Herero people in Namibia call it Onyanga – the desert onion.
