Welwitschia mirabilis grows in the Namib desert, sprawling along the ground. A ragged looking thing which is quietly amazing.

This is a tough plant. It can survive 5 years without water, and can live for over 2000 years. Impressive, considering it's nothing more than a woody stem, a shallow root system, and just two continuously growing leaves which split and fray with age.

It's also a traditional food source for local peoples. The Herero people in Namibia call it Onyanga – the desert onion.

An old Welwitschia mirabilis, lying across the Namib desert sand. As the leaves continue to grow, they fray more and more, and eventually the tips dry out and fall away. But this doesn't bother the plant, which will keep growing those same leaves for its entire life. What a beautiful, messy old thing!
