the five types of "i need a haircut but we're in lockdown":

1. I need a haircut and i will fuckin riot for it
2. I need a haircut and will impatiently wait for SAH orders to be lifted
3. I need a haircut but there's, like, nine billion online tutorials on how to DIY it and i won't see anyone irl before it has a chance to grow out anway so new skill time
4. I already invested in cheap clippers as a broke college student so bold of you to assume i've bothered leaving the house for this shit in the last decade
5. *banging on #4's door* "I already cut my hair but i need it to be GAYER can i borrow your clippers for an undercut"

the fiction we're told is money was invented because it was inconvenient to barter for everything, but that kind of a barter-based economy only exists in situations where people who've been taught that myth are forced to do without currency. in the real world, barter only exists between strangers, with no common authority binding them — with friends, you trade mutual obligations. in the same situation, currency would be worthless, since there's no-one to fiat it

food, sourdough, covid-adjacent I guess

If you cannot reliably get hold of bread yeast, and you live somewhere that elderflowers grow, this may be of interest:

I made my sourdough starter in 2018 by putting some elderflower heads in a container of flour and water (half each by volume). After three days it was absolutely fizzing. First few loaves tasted floral, and then it settled down.

It's not a very sour taste but that's probably because I store it at room temperature and feed it haphazardly.

Go. Rebel.

Tipping, icy cold take

I mean, like...

It is entirely reasonable to add as much as you want to a delivery tip or a tip jar in a store

You don't have to just tip 20-30% right now

You can go as high as you want and afford

That is a thing you can just go right ahead and do

You can just drop $50 on your coffee, and $100 on the delivery driver, and $75 on someone entertaining or educating you, all in one day if you want

You don't need permission

And thing is...

It doesn't stay with that person. It goes where it's needed. That's how helping out struggling people works. It gets spread around to everyone they wanted to help and couldn't, who you might not know

when I say things like "people should, in the general case, dance," please understand that I don't mean you should dance well, or that it is too late for you and you'll never learn. neither thing is true. you probably already dance in some contexts, to some degree, and I'm glad, and you should continue dancing. I'm saying you should dance until you're comfortable doing it and you've found ways to move rhythmically that you enjoy. it will be good for you and your relationship to yoyr body— *no,* I am not talking about a cardio habit! I'm talking about learning how to make your body feel good — and it's a cultural knowledge that's prerequisite to other knowledges and helps you connect with other people

Frank discussion of genocide and its minimization

The Japanese internment camps in the United States were horrible atrocities and a literal genocide campaign.

The only opportunity to not be tortured to death in a concentration camp was to "prove your patriotism" by joining the 442nd Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army. If you enlisted, you would be assaulted and harassed by white U.S. soldiers regularly and continuously sent on suicide missions.

This is something largely glossed over and hidden from the eyes of the people of the U.S. today and it was very much then as well. Propaganda and restriction of publicly available information was used to intentionally obfuscate and minimize this genocide.

The same is being done with the U.S. concentration camps holding refugees fleeing the results of our own colonialism and imperialism today.

There is nothing minor about a genocide, even if a state tells you otherwise. Even if a state tells you it's justified by the actions of the victims of genocide. Even if a state tells you it's necessary to commit the genocide for the safety and welfare of others.

Never minimize genocide.

A transphobic "woke" trend that needs to stop

Not every feminine boy, even self-ID'd feminine boy, is a trans girl or even nonbinary. I think some people think it helps to do this, and maybe they even feel justified in doing so because they were called "femboy" pejoratively in the past or something, but it's about on par with suggesting that every tomboy is secretly a trans boy. Subverting gender norms, yes. Inherently trans or NB, no.

disabled people for years, decades, whatever: hey since there's this internet thing, do you think you could make it more possible to participate in X without physically being there?

abled people: nope, you need to physically be at X for it to work, otherwise there's no point. you need to overcome your disabilities and we don't want to coddle you.

*coronavirus hits*

abled people: hey, idea! what if we did X remotely

For me, "social distancing" is a candidate for the worst word of the year because it totally puts the wrong emphasis. The most important thing we actually need to flatten the curve is physical distancing.

Please do not distance socially and do not isolate yourselves or others. Keep socialising remotely, stay in contact, look for and update each other. Especially if times get harder. Thank you.
