is a reasonable economic system that destroys 100 million trees a year to mass-produce something that literally no one asked for and literally everyone hates

YES! At last someone did the math on junk mail. I've been appalled for years that junk mail is not yet illegal!

@socalledunitedstates @remotenemesis thank God we've replaced so much of it with spam

no, wait, both junk mail and Spam suggest there is no god

@socalledunitedstates in the Netherlands there are stickers for on your mailbox: “yes - no”, meaning you like the local free newspapers, but not the advertising, and one that says “no - no”, meaning you don’t want any of it. Delivery people are obligated to not go against what the sticker says. Unfortunately that doesn’t work for stuff that comes with the mail, that has your name on it.

@socalledunitedstates @gcupc Hey, I say "thanks for the fire-starter" and burn it for heat - except plastic and super glossy stuff, which I either use for crafts (paper beads!) or recycle again. I.e. it doesn't all get thrown out.

@aldersprig @socalledunitedstates Reusing things is fine but not creating the waste in the first place is even better.

@squeakypancakes @socalledunitedstates @gcupc Granted: My only argument is that it's not always unasked for and it's not always trashed.

If you asked my Business Professor, he'd tell you paper mailers are the way to go because you can get the most exposure for the least amount of money.

Man it's almost like the profit motive is *terrible*
