I don’t remember any high profile open letters about “cancel culture” when people were being quietly ostracised for coming out as trans. But a rich white woman faces a few consequences after coming out as a bigot, and suddenly “our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial” and “this stifling atmosphere will ultimately harm the most vital causes of our time.”
"our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial"
I agree with that single phrase.
We're trying to get the bigot to *shut the hell up!*
@freyja_wildes Yeah, I was thinking the same thing!
You intrigue me a lot
You writing style is very direct and sometimes I'm afraid I'm annoying to you.
But you seem to be a very nice and interesting person
@freyja_wildes I know I can be a little blunt sometimes, but I assure you, you’re not annoying in the slightest 😊 and thank you!
Thank you. It's nice of you to answer me
@InvaderXan you know this reminds me of something a youtuber said about right wing fash rhetoric. Whenever people do some mildly disruptive protesting or make some sort of buzz about trying to make social progress it's always "the beginning of the end of 'western civilization'" and idk people calling out bigots being “our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial” sounds like it's a wee bit of the same formula🤔
@awfulawfulthings It totally does. They're always so hilariously over-the-top and melodramatic about these things. It would be funny if they weren't so frighteningly serious!
Remember, it's "Western Civilization" that thought that slavery and the patriarchy and marriage inequality and hundreds of other now-rejected (or currently being-rejected) institutions were good ideas.
It's not really Western Civilization that's collapsing. It's their concept of Western Civilization that's collapsing.
There was some recent drama in a certain community, where a bunch of prominent members turned out to be abusers, pedos, or enablers thereof. The vast majority of the accusations have been proven true by confession of the perpetrators. And the people complaining about "cancel culture" did a great job of outing themselves as pro-sex-with-minors, or anti-requiring-consciousness-and/or-non-dubious-consent.
But there was one accusation that got proven false, and it could have turned into a horror story for the accuser if not for the particulars of his defense. (Not like everybody can claim to have horribly mangled not-quite-functional genitals from a botched circumcision).
Basically, complaining about "cancel culture" is what might end up making creating a cancel culture, because it's such a horrible defense that it makes most forms of defense from false accusation fail.
@InvaderXan the cultural institutions they espouse and want to protect, of course, are white supremacy and capital and cisnormativity and heteronormativity and patriarchy, and they feel threatened by anyone else showing up to speak out against them
