Optical Illusions

There are no yellow pixels in this image.

Optical Illusions

These four squares are actually identical.

Optical Illusions

There is no spiral in this image. These are concentric circles.

Optical Illusions

This image does not really bulge outwards, and those lines are all perfectly straight

Optical Illusions

There are no orange pixels in this image.

Optical Illusions

These two letters are the same colour.

(This may be another illusion which not everyone can see)

Optical Illusions

These are concentric circles. None of these lines cross over each other.

I'm fairly sure several of these illusions are created by a psychologist named Akiyoshi Kitaoka at Ritsumeikan University in Osaka. If you like these or are interested in optical illusions more generally, you should check out his web page where you can find many more!

Optical Illusions

@pfx I literally desaturated the yellow pixels 5 minutes ago, just to make sure.

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan and when i scroll it a bit fast i see awesome patterns (like magnetic fields ~)

Optical Illusions

@baerd I always like when that happens!

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan I love that no amount of focus or understanding can make me see it another way. These are great!

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan you're terrible. I love this.

re: Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan do optical illusions give anyone else headaches?

I guess they tend to crash and reboot the brain and that's stressful?

re: Optical Illusions

@SoniEx2 Depends on the illusion, I guess

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan Is it normal for some of these to look, uh, jittery and weirdly painful to look at or is that just me?

They're super neat either way.

Optical Illusions

@frostotron @InvaderXan They basically glitch out your eyes/trick them into detecting things that are not there, which causes discomfort as you subconsciously strain to see things better. At least that's how it feels to me.

Here's another fun one. No black dots in this picture.

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan why are you doing this to my brain

@InvaderXan The two letters are the same color? Ah, good. For a second there, I thought it was a Jojo reference.

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan i wonder what this looks like to someone who has no familiarity with anything resembling this sort of fruit

Optical Illusions

@carcinopithecus The illusion is supposed to be about colour perception more than expectation, though I was wondering the same thing.

re: Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan wow this one is powerfull !

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan That's weird. I can make it stop moving by focusing at the center of the image.

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan
It obviously bulges inwards :blobhyperthink:

Optical Illusions

@malerbabomba This is like the black and blue dress argument!

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan
Let's have a fight about illusions, like the whole story of civilization.

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan next you're going to tell us it's not moving either

Optical Illusions

@thamesynne Yeah, I'm afraid it's not a gif. It's your brain that's doing that.

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan in fairness, my brain still insists that i need to check the shadow that just ran under my desk to see if it's a cat... six years after i had cats. so i'm feeling it's not really earned the final word on the matter ;-)

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan @thamesynne
I used to pick one of the not-gifs as a background for an online board game, just to annoy and distract my opponent and hopefully win the game 馃榿

re: Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan identical in what way ?

re: Optical Illusions

@nino In every way. they're literally identical!

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan Photoshop tells me those squares are actually different colors, what gives?

Optical Illusions

@immychan Check again. They genuinely are identical, though they aren't solid colour. Each has a vertical gradient.

If I put them on a neutral gray background and slice them up like this, it makes their real shading a bit more obvious.

Also it gives a new illusion in the final image, that the right side is darker than the left side. It isn't though 鈥 the background is solid 50% gray.

Optical Illusions

@thatgirllily @InvaderXan I showed it to my roomie and he immediately looked away with a "I don't want to know"

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan This may be a deuteranomalistic vision test too! I鈥檓 not seeing yellow. ^_^;

re: Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan I don't see any yellow 馃槩 where our brains are supposed to see yellow ?

re: Optical Illusions

@nino In the white spaces near one of the black circles. Not everyone sees this one.

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan brains are fake, actually

Optical Illusions

@strangeglyph At least, what they tell us is fake.

Optical Illusions

@InvaderXan Just a note that I think some of these illusions are created by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, so when possible it may be best to give him credit for creating them.

See his account on twitter [ twitter.com/AkiyoshiKitaoka ].

Optical Illusions

@sohkamyung Ohhhh! Yes, I know of him. Thank you, you're right, I should make a point to include this.
