Where do y'all buy yarn from? Are there any, like, indie, DIY yarn spinners out there?

@teslas_moustache I have legit always wondered if I could spin yarn out of my dogs undercoat… a few times a year I basically end up with a new carpet that I then have to spend weeks vacuuming up, that's got to be enough for a small amount right? (but no really, jokes aside, I don't know what makes good quality yarn, but it's extremely soft and I feel like it would be very nice)

@sam you might be able to felt something with that, but I doubt you could knit a scarf out of dog hair.

@teslas_moustache @sam you can! People do. Check out my other comment with the cat fur blanket I'm currently knitting. Spinning dog undercoat is more frequently used. The yarn might be pure dog fur, but it's more likely blended with some type of wool.

@teslas_moustache @sam
@Paws2Spindle is on a complete dog hair adventure right now. You will love it.

@sam @teslas_moustache oh, @Paws2Spindle is doing that, i'd reccomend checking out their posts

@teslas_moustache I'm currently making a knitted blanket from the fur I comb from my floofy cats, blended with wool I purchased from Dharma Trading. You can learn to spin your own yarn. Pick up a simple drop spindle or support spindle and a braid or two of wool, and watch a video to get started. You can also dye your wool with kool-aid, that's fun.

@temporal_spider that's super cool, but I will likely not be doing that. I don't even do real knitting. I just use those plastic looms to make hats and scarves, and maybe one day socks.

There have got to be people out there who just love making yarn.

@teslas_moustache Are you asking whether there are people out there who make their own yarn (which, yes)? Or are you asking whether there are people out there who make their own yarn and sell it (also yes)?

@teslas_moustache I spin a lot of my own, buy some machine spun in local yarn shops, but I wouldn't know where to buy from other spinsters either
Handspinning takes so much time that any yarn youll find will probably be very expensive

@heliotrope yeah, it's interesting. I've heard that because of some agricultural/political jiggery-pokery, shorn wool is almost worthless until it gets processed by someone else.

@teslas_moustache yeah, like I'm hearing farmers who hold sheep for non-wool purposes give the wool away for free or throw it out. Here in the Netherlands I can buy a kilo of nice unprocessed wool for about €10.
But then thinking about how much time it'd take to turn that into handspun yarn, that's the real cost
