Cold-hardy avocado project update (thread)
I'll start with the most impressive seedling, a not-quite-one-year-old seedling of Aravaipa, which showed almost no leaf damage initially, and still shows only minor leaf damage.
This two year-old seedling of Mexicola Grande is a close second among the seedlings, with only a few damaged leaves and growing tips. It is planted in a more protected area near the house, though.
This tree is grafted with the #avocado cultivar "Northrup," one of the hardier varieties out of the few that have been tested outside. It only has a few brown spots on the leaves.
This is grafted with the cultivar "Aravaipa," which shows essentially no frost damage, other than a slight yellowing of the newest leaves.
And next, some less fortunate seedlings. These are both seedlings of "Royal-Wright", and showed leaf damage after even a mild frost, and total leaf death and partial stem death from the hard frosts
Most of the seedlings outside are somewhere in between the ones shown above. These two seedlings of "Mexicola" are pretty representative of the other seedlings not photographed today, with moderate leaf damage but no apparent harm to stems or dormant buds.
That's it for the project update this time, I'll probably try to do these kinds of threads about once a week, and will pin the most recent.
