on how and how not to learn from abuse in our communities [abuse meta] Show more
when we're talking about abuse, and we're not personally supporting survivors or taking action against abusers, I think it would be way more useful to frame the issues in terms of how do we best prevent these toxic behaviors from flourishing in our community, rather than framing it as "abuser is a bad person. Is person X a bad person?"
As soon as we start viewing abusers as inherently other from us, we cut ourselves from learning how to recognize and not replicate their behaviours.
And if you find it uncomfortable that I just said we all have the potential to be toxic to the point of abusive, then good. Cause we should feel uncomfortable about that, hopefully it will make us more aware and thoughtful in our actions and in building our communities.
