First tomatoes are ready and they’re so delicious! 🍅 🌱

Maybe gross about bugs

@whakkee congrats!!!! Some of my tomato varieties are ripening now as well! Although we live on opposite ends of earth it is tomato season here as well (winter), in summer fruit flies lay eggs in them so it makes it much harder to grow them

@Some_Person wow, I thought the outside of a tomato (not sure how that’s called in English) was protecting it against insects?

Maybe gross about bugs

@whakkee the fruit flies that live here have a special stinger that pierces the skin of the tomato (like a bee) so it can lay its eggs inside. They're a different type of fruit fly to the ones you see in the kitchen and stuff. They also like ruining peaches and many other fruits, you have to put a special net over them but I didn't know that they stung tomatoes until I googled why I had fly larvae in them!

@Some_Person evolutionary it’s probably smart of them, but it’s a pain if you want to grow veggies and fruit. It doesn’t look as nice with a net, but at some point there’s no choice probably

@whakkee yeah, it's annoying! But thankfully they don't seem to be active in winter, which is actually warm enough here to grow tomatoes even better than in summer! Once summer comes I'll have to find some nets to keep them away though

@Some_Person I definitely can’t grow tomatoes here in winter. Even the summer season is too short, so I grow them inside until they’re big enough and when the chances of frost are gone they can go outside after getting used to the temperature slowly

@whakkee that sounds annoying, we have a pretty much infinite growing season for most vegetables... If anything, it's a bit reversed! In summer it's way too hot for a lot of my plants, my capsicums looked very dodgy (their leaves curled up and they stopped growing) and half of my tomatoes died in the heat... But as soon as the weather cooled down the remaining tomatoes and capsicum started recovering and growing new leaves! It's a bit strange compared to most places I guess lol. On the positive side, I'm guessing you have enough chill hours to grow a bunch of fruit that we can't grow! We can't grow a lot of fruit varieties, ones that we used to grow back when we lived in a cooler climate just don't fruit here. There was a berry I remember eating as a child (I think it's called haskap in English) but it is too warm here to grow it. I attached a photo as well in case you recognise it :)

@Some_Person that doesn’t ring a bell to me, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that one before - but then again, I only started growing stuff about a year ago, and I messed up half of the season because I got too busy with work, and because I’m clumsy with plants in general 🌱🤷‍♀️

@whakkee that makes sense! It's not grown in many places as far as I know. It's a really nice berry though!
