customer: Good morning!
me: morning
customer: How are you?
me, autism haver: you have exhausted your daily pleasantry limit of: one (1)
Allistic people, what do you get out of hearing me give the same expected response to your meaningless little phrases. We're not communicating any information to each other. What's the point
Stop answering this question I refuse to know anything about the allistics
@socalledunitedstates I dont think anyone knows
@cuttlefish How are people with allism not exhausted all the time
@socalledunitedstates I get pretty tired of it when I'm at work. It's a weird thing in general
@socalledunitedstates Small talking is in-group behaviour. They're trying to signal that they see you as part of their larger social group. Not small talking is often interpreted as out-group behaviour. Stopping small talk "early" by their standards makes them awkward because they're still trying to understand if you are in-group or not.
It's a little bit like grooming behaviours in other primates but more wordy and less productive.
@socalledunitedstates 1. They are awkward and understand this script helps pass interaction time. 2. They are friendly and genuinely curious about the lives of the folks that work where they live. 3. They aren't really thinking about it and probably won't register your response if it's timely and short.
@moss "timely and short" is tbh huge in my experience - I had a few different "I am in a state of constant suffering but I don't want to make the conversation about me so I'll say something deliberately vacuous" two-word responses I'd slot in on bad days and a lot of people never noticed
@socalledunitedstates I put up with it but will not give more than the expected minimum.
@socalledunitedstates they think information is being communicated, that's their point.
@socalledunitedstates Social lubricant/filling silence, I guess. Which obviously doesn't work if only one person in the conversation is allistic/actually experiences pleasantries as social lube
@hummingrain social lubricant allergy
@socalledunitedstates But have you considered-- *is launched into the face of the Sun, as is just*
