You Wouldn't Download an E-Scooter
(how to jailbreak impounded scooters, legally, for only about $30)
@socalledunitedstates the only issue is making sure it's a Xiaomi MIJIA M365, as it seems the companies have stopped using that model a bit ago. ill have to take one of the bird scooters they just put in around here recently and take a closer look myself.
@socalledunitedstates I love how it's 100% legal too, since it's not circumventing any kind of digital protection.
It's literally just replacing the motherboard with one that happens to have different software on it.
If that were illegal, then places like NewEgg and the boxes in my closet full of spare computer parts wouldn't exist.
@socalledunitedstates I'm confused by the apparent combination of "the impounded scooters at auction are cheap" and "it's not worth it to the ridesharing companies to buy them back". Are the transaction costs too high for the company or something (e.g. too many different auctions to send someone to all of them)? Is it that the city won't resell things to their original owner (but that seems really hard to enforce)?
@lukesci It doesn't say it's not worth it, just that they don't do it
@socalledunitedstates Well, if it would be worth it to them and they don't do it, that's confusing too! Unless we think they're not in it for the money, which is...not something I've often heard companies like this accused of. (Although it would explain their lack of profits...)
@lukesci Capitalists don't tend to like reusing things when they could make new things instead 🤷
It'd involve getting people out there to buy them, collect them, and ship them back, which is complicated and not easy to automate. They'd rather just let them rot in landfills
@socalledunitedstates I love this. I wish my city impounded these things.
Unfortunately they welcomed Lime with open arms and now there's all these scooters fucking everywhere.
@socalledunitedstates I really really wish I could find the equivalent for Lime/Jump bikes. But so far people seem to have mostly hacked the scooters, alas.
