Please, fucking talk to a single person who's worked retail before you speak for us and spread the propaganda that we're punished when other people shoplift

We're fucking not. That virtually never happens at any chain store, which are the only places you should be shoplifting from anyway

Please correct people when you hear this, it's getting so fucking old

It is *impossible* to determine whether lost inventory was stolen, misplaced, miscounted, damaged, never arrived, or what, and it's so much more likely to be anything but shoplifting that stores can pretty much rule it out

On top of that, it's illegal to punish the employees for other people's theft, and no large company wants to risk the HR disaster that'd be. And none of them want their workers to be randomly accusing customers of stealing either, which is what that practice would incentivize

@socalledunitedstates Seriously. Someone freaking stole something right from under my nose and you know what happened? Nothing. Not a damn thing.

If you work in retail long enough, what you realize is that they may encourage you to stop shoplifters, but there's so little you can legally do aboyu that anyway that if you "fail" they can't do a damn thing.

Shrink is a manager problem, not a lower-level clerk problem.

@socalledunitedstates You do realize that stuff contributes to shrink, which hurts a store, right?

@Ertain Oh, won't *somebody* please think of the *investors*

@socalledunitedstates Nah, those bastards will still get their cut. The people at the bottom, though, will be cut out.

@Ertain By this same logic, we should never strike or boycott, and everyone should work as hard as possible and spend all their money so the big companies have more wealth to spread around. Oh, and if they have to pay lots of taxes or follow expensive regulations then they'll have less to trickle down, so we have to get rid of those too. Because austerity is our fault for not being good enough workers/consumers, and so every time we shoplift we're only hurting ourselves

@socalledunitedstates No, sir, I'm not saying that's how it works. What I'm saying is that stores are set up such that any shrink incurred most be taken from somewhere, namely the people who work hard at the lower level. At times, this includes well meaning employees and managers, not the higher-ups in the company. If anything else, theft increases the likelihood that a company will close a store, and those employees will lose their jobs, while the higher-ups will still keep theirs.

@socalledunitedstates What should be done is more regulation to keep these supermarket companies in check, to ensure that the employees have wages which allow them to actually live on, and to provide benefits which allow the employees to live a decent life. Stealing from the store doesn't send that message. It only goes to tell the managers and executives who own these stores that there's greater crime in that area, and that neighborhood may be unfriendly to what that store provides.

@Ertain This is literally "we need to make sure that companies do well and capitalists are happy so that their wealth can trickle down." Some people need to steal to survive. And praying for regulations hasn't worked yet, despite everyone trying, and meanwhile people are dying without healthcare

Get out of here with that liberal nonsense. The solution is radical unions and direct action, and that includes theft. I refuse to bow to the demands of the ruling class

@socalledunitedstates Fine, if you want to be labeled a "thief", be my guest.

Good day to you.
