i decided to make a graph of toots/hour by each instance in the top ten based on the stats from @federationbot
the first chart contains a line for the total toots, this made the individual instances to small to see, so the second chart doesn't have it
this only covers the last 24h, i may do a longer period at some point
this is i think limited to public posts, but i think it gives a better view of where the active users are then the user numbers instances display, since users tend to move around and instances tend to accumulate more and more inactive accounts over time
the ten biggest posting instances were
friends.nico 10.1%
mstdn.jp 8.85%
humblr.social 6.42%
switter.at 5.72%
mastodon.social 4.98%
berries.space 2.38%
social.quodverum.com 2.26%
radical.town 1.87%
mstdn.kemono-friends.info 1.05%
trollian.space 0.961%
couple more points, out of the top ten biggest instances mastodon.social is the only one to have closed registrations
the fediverse is more centralised than ideal, but its also still so small that an instance can be in the top ten most active practically overnight, ilistrated most recently be quodverum and the two tumblr instances
it would be nice to have data over severely months, i suspect things are getting more decentralised, but without data its just a guess
@radikalgrafitio Are the instances sorted by total toots, or does it just look close to the eye? :)
@tewha hi, the key on the graphs is not in order of total toots, but i made a list of the top 10 by total toots, which is in order https://sunbeam.city/@radikalgrafitio/101559918201114412
mastodon.social is 2 places lower, and knzk doesn't make the top 10, all though it was close
@radikalgrafitio Interesting. Thanks for sharing that. :) Was that order just an accident?
@tewha it was just the the order that i encountered the instances, if i started it at a different time and day it would be different
@radikalgrafitio Ah! That totally makes sense. You'd encounter them in approximately the order of heaviest posting, but not exactly. Thanks! :)
