@ArtistMarciaX Honestly this. The bare minimum of requesting consent to use someone else's post is not being fulfilled here.

Earlier today I went on a tear explaining how Teraum, my MUD, might work in gameplay, and this led me to babbling about how player-characters might end up living, as some philosophers say we do, only able to observe and interact with a facsimile universe created by their observations and knowledge of the actual universe around them.

And the idea of implementing that as how the game engine works blew my mind, and I hope it blows yours: tenforward.social/@emsenn/1034

A couple of things about "overpopulation"

There is supposedly fairly good book called World Hunger:12 Myths, ( worldhunger.org/word-hunger-12 ) which expounds on many of the misconceptions about "world hunger". I confess that I have not read the whole thing, but there is a sort of spark notes article here: share-international.org/archiv . The most relevant myths are 1 "Not Enough Food to Go Around" and 3 "Too Many People" though all the myths are relevant to a broader conversation about the world and our struggle to not wreck things for ourselves.

This one, which I already shared but am sharing again: thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource
Because it's a really solid breakdown of why many of the major Asian famines of the last 200 years are the result of colonial governance not natural forces. Great commentary on how Malthus was used as propaganda to justifying starving South Asians while the British continued to export ag products!

Imagine thinking that famines are actually caused by absolute shortages of food

It's interesting to note that I've been on the Fediverse for a similar amount of time as I've been been studying my degree, and in that time I've learned literally *orders of magnitude* more than the degree has ever given me, just through browsing the collaborative efforts of this enormous distributed network.

@rebutte Yea and I'm telling you: We, the second group, that is actually doing radical action to change the world for the better, /are not interested in talking with the first group, or with a liaison of theirs./

It is a waste of our time and whether you see it that way or not, we see it as class sabotage.

scrape meta + bit wider context

This Tweet Called My Back happened 6 yrs ago (omg) but this issue of scraping data and twoots isn't necessarily new, mining Tl's for content ain't either.

TTCMB was a moment in which prominent Blk, Indigenous, WOC came together and said no more to academics, writers and others w institutional power and access stealing and mining their content to get paid, whilst they got paid dust.

@rebutte "Folk like to think satire is doing something, when mostly it just leaves them satisfied. Satisfied, instead of angry, which is what they should be."

and

"Let's never forget those Berlin cabarets and stand-up comedy clubs, which did so much to stop the rise of fascism."

Paraphrasing Tom Lehrer and Peter Cook respectively.

fedi meta

This is probably a timely reminder to say that I'm working on a new fediverse software thing with friends that actually gives a shit about addressing the kind of situations where some idiot scientists scrape thousands of posts without permission and then call some of the people in those posts 'sexual deviants'
