I found a photo of the family PC we got in 2000
Does anyone think they could help me identify the case or joystick or really anything going on here (minus the stereo system, I still have that one)? Cause I loved that computer
@hazelnot Looks like a Logitech Quickcam. Also Pink Panther and some apple juice.
@hazelnot @astraluma it *might* be the Logitech Wingman Digital Extreme. The 1997 model, NOT the 3D version
@hazelnot I think the monitor is a Viewsonic.
@hazelnot the joystick might be a sidewinder of some sort? The webcam looks Logitech maybe. The case looks like most custom build cases around that time so really good luck on that one!
@Shrigglepuss someone identified the webcam, it's the Logitech Quickcam
The case, yeah, we got it from a local PC store and I'm pretty sure they built it themselves. There was an MSI sticker on it, as well as the store's logo (the white sticker).
Apparently that case was fairly common for AMD Duron prebuilds. I think ours either was an Athlon or my dad upgraded it to one though.
@hazelnot Maybe some computer review magazines from around that time might shed some light on it, if it was a popular one =D
@hazelnot looks compaq-y to me??
@hi_cial I don't think it was built by a big name company like that, the stickers on it were the local computer store's and MSI
@hazelnot hmmm hmmm they mightve just been making their own machines then in which case good luck :x
@hazelnot looks like a Microsoft SideWinder joystick to me. probably the original model.
@gsuberland I don't think it was a Sidewinder, I've seen photos of it and comparing them with my memories from 20 years ago there are some differences like the POV hat and the base - also the stick itself had one of those rubber thingies that looks like the middle bit of an articulated bus
@hazelnot ah, I was reading those in the photo as the exposed spring on those early units, but that makes sense.
I do recall a joystick with a spring guard like that from back in the day but I just cannot remember the name for the life of me.
@hazelnot oh i think i used to have that exact joystick! iirc it's a Microsoft SideWinder and it should have a USB version
hope i helped :)
@048 I don't think that's a SideWinder, I've looked up photos of that before and the base looks different
I'm pretty sure it was a Logitech or a Genius
@hazelnot The webcam is definitely the Logitech Quickcam (Express)!
@joepie91 hah I remember that name! It came with a software package I forgot the name of that LGR (or another retro tech YouTuber I watch) recently showed on his channel, twicd
@hazelnot Also, the design language of the PC case reminds me of Packard Bell - however, I don't think they ever used that particular colour scheme. The colors are more HP, but I don't think those were quite that curvy.
Gateway or Toshiba, perhaps?
@hazelnot (Though from what I can see from the badge, it looks like it might be one of those local computer shop no-brands that slaps their poorly-designed logo on a generic case. The weird 45 degree angle of the logo is a tell)
@joepie91 yeah my parents got it from a computer shop downtown, one of the stickers is from there
I *think* the other sticker might've been MSI? Or at least my earliest memories of MSI are in relation to that PC
@hazelnot Yeah then it was most likely an OEM case used by many small 'non-brands' and local computer builders, the MSI sticker would've been included with the motherboard or GPU when they built the system, and they would have just added that on there too
@hazelnot Regretfully, not a lot of documentation on the internet of OEM cases from back then :( You're most likely to see them appear in very old pictures of people's gaming setup
@joepie91 damn :o
@hazelnot This is the same one, I think? http://www.diffusedion.co.uk/images/Computers/Duron.jpg
@joepie91 yeah, someone else replied with the same link haha, I think they tagged the owner of the website to see if they can identify it
@hazelnot That one is described as follows, which seems to confirm my suspicions:
"2001-2003: AMD Duron 700mhz - First of my own builds. Had a 64mb GeForce 2 MX, 256MB RAM (I think) and a 30GB Western Digital HD."
@Len0w0ThinkBad the photo is from I think 2002 or 2003 and that PC was probably the most expensive thing in the house by far
@Len0w0ThinkBad also iirc we got it in installments and paid for it for a few years
