Does anyone know how I could dual-boot Windows *without* it deleting my Linux boot partition?
Last 2 or 3 times I tried to dual-boot I was just left with Linux unable to boot because Windows overwrote its EFI partition.
Even when I told it to install to another drive.
Even when I took out the Linux drive, installed Windows, and then connected the drive again.
@hazelnot@sunbeam.city you don't lol
use a VM
@chjara I'm not made of money, I can't afford a second graphics card to make Windows not run like shit in a VM.
@hazelnot@sunbeam.city then get ready for windows overwriting your EFI forever, unless you like swap out the disk each boot
@chjara Cool and good passive-aggression, great sure cool
@hazelnot@sunbeam.city i mean there's no solution here, windows just does what it wants and you basically can't stop it in any consistent manner
sorry if i come off as passive agressive
@chjara >windows just does what it wants and you basically can't stop it in any consistent manner
I know, but I'm losing my mind cause Linux is really missing some very useful software like After Effects and a good editing suite for designer-y stuff, but at the same time I don't want to switch back to Windows
I thought I'd be able to approximate a result with the tools available here, but apparently Blender can't even do some of the things I was told I'd be able to do with it, like After Effects-type 2D motion graphics, and so I'm pretty much out of luck unless I find a way to use Windows only some of the time
@hazelnot@sunbeam.city VM or wine really
or sell your soul to apple (or hackintosh~) to get a relatively non-ass system with most Pro Fessional software
@chjara None of the software I need runs at all in Wine, and like I said, I can't afford a second GPU for VM usage, let alone a Mac.
A used MacBook from like a decade ago costs more than all the money I have.
@hazelnot windows just kinda does that, hence the recommendation being installing linux after windows, or at least booting the installer again to have linux overwrite the bootloader again
@f0x But I already have Linux installed and don't want to reinstall it
I also don't know how to install just the bootloader
@hazelnot yeah it's kind of a pain.. which linux do you have installed?
@f0x EndeavourOS
@hazelnot https://discovery.endeavouros.com/system-rescue/repair-a-non-booting-grub/2021/03/ seems to describe the process, but yeah.. it's not fun
@hazelnot @f0x not to be a wet blanket but I have tried to dual boot every laptop I've bought since about 1998, and I have always ended up blowing Windows away. Very frustrating. I now have an old i3 as a Windows box that I turn on if I really need Windows - so once or twice a year, usually to document something.
