Mastodon people might be interested to know that I run a wiki about ways to pass on things we no longer need.

It's called Pass It On and I'm always looking for new information, especially local info from people who DON'T live in Cardiff, Sheffield or Oxfordshire!

sites.google.comPass It On

I started Pass It On because I felt it was hard to find info about organisations who'll take still-useful things.

There are loads of organisations out there, not all charities who'll actively welcome your unwanted-but-still-useful-stuff.

There are people who want to dispose of still-useful stuff responsibly, but don't have a clue how, so they end up recycling stuff (at best).

The Pass It On wiki aims to fill that information gap, but it can only really thrive if people contribute!

Pass It On has an account on birdsite, but very few people are interested in sharing info with the wiki OR retweeting the info we do have.

I've actually been quite shocked at how lukewarm the reception has been - as far as I know, there is literally no other wiki or any other kind of site doing what Pass It On is trying to do. And yet it has 15 followers on birdsite, which is fewer than one follower for every year I've been running it!

A friend suggests Mastodon might be less barren soil for this kind of thing. Maybe it's worth setting up a Pass It On account on here?

@griffinkate
I think a lot of us over on sunbeam.city would be interested, but I might be wrong.

@solarpunkgnome Well, it can't possibly be as pathetic as the response I got on birdsite...can it? It would be interesting to find out, although I think SBC hides follower counts now so I can't do a like-for-like comparison.

@griffinkate
Yeah, I think we can do better than that. I think the co-op instances have a lot of people contributing to wiki-type projects, so hopefully the people who do interact will be more proactive.

@solarpunkgnome Right, that was the push I needed! Watch this space!

@griffinkate
Awesome!

Also, I am able to see my own follower numbers in the Fedilab app, if that's a useful metric for you. I don't think I can see anyone else's, though.

@solarpunkgnome Sounds like a useful app. Thank you.

@alex I don't know what this toot means. Did you send it by mistake?
