Lawmakers rushed the bill to authorize this giveaway through the state legislature without meaningful public discussion of Amazon providing technology to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hunt down and deport immigrants.
Before Governor Northam signs the bill into law, giving away millions to Amazon in the state budget, we must pressure him to publicly acknowledge and demand an end to the disturbing ties between Amazon and ICE that put all Virginia residents in danger. Amazon provides cloud computing services that help ICE track and stockpile all sorts of information about immigrants, their families, and their friends, and has recently pitched ICE on its facial recognition software called Rekognition. Amazon reportedly brings in $600,000 per month on just one aspect of its multi-pronged support for ICE. ICE cannot wage its war against immigrants without the critical infrastructure support provided by tech corporations like Amazon.
While Northam claims to oppose separating migrant families, he appears not to see that that is exactly what ICE, powered by Amazon--and its facial recognition software--is doing. It's time for Northam to actually walk the talk and show solidarity with immigrants by confronting Amazon and demanding they end their relationship with ICE.
We need to remind Northam he was elected to represent and protect Virginia residents, not endorse deals that perpetuate human rights abuses.

Amazon's relationship with ICE isn't the only reason to oppose the proposed HQ2 deal—the company abuses workers, will cause displacement and gentrification and holds outsized economic and political power. Together we can send a clear message to Governor Northam: he's either with Amazon, ICE, and their human rights abuses, or the immigrant-rich communities of Virginia.
