Please, fellow white folks interacting with BIPOC folks. Listen; don't debate, don't give advice or make recommendations to unless it's explicitly asked for.
Our goal should be to learn how we can make things better. Here, on fedi, as well as the real world. That starts with listening.
@derek
Second that. If the comment is upsetting you, step back and cool off. And if someone calls you out, it doesn't mean YOU are an issue, it means your behavior is an issue. Being wrong is fine, so long as you are willing to fix anything that's broken. Take a breath, check your ego, and see if maybe the advice applies to you.
@derek
I want to add it isn't as easy as I made it sound, but it is rewarding in the long run. When my friend (now partner) first called me out on racism, I was very much "not all white people ...". But they were persistent. And now I'm at a place where I can be comfortable knowing that much of what I know is wrong, but I can listen and learn and know better. A better and less fragile comfort than I had before.
@derek cannot agree more
@derek very good advice. We all need to listen more to one another
@derek This. The amount of white fragility I faced when I tooted about white people calling themselves Twitter 'refugees' was...not funny.
@derek can I start this more then once?
@derek sorry, help me out here: BIPOC?
@harrybo93 @derek Black, Indigenous, and People Of Colour
@harrybo93 @derek an abbreviation that describes non-white people, primarily black and indigenous people
@derek @harrybo93 Black, Indigenous, People of Colo(u)r. Usually used as an umbrella. The term “people of colour” (actually I think WOC came first) originated, in the US, as a way for racialised people to organise collectively in alliance with Black people - recognising common interests. It’s also usually useful to distinguish Indigenous people from other POC (and POC migrant groups from Black people with enslaved ancestors). None of that means that individuals or whole communities might not be two or more of Black, Indigenous or other POC, but the groups have different historical and political positions. Hence, umbrella acronym.
@derek Even though we should step away as far as possible from defining people by race in general, this does not mean denying that people still are judged by race, for good or for bad.
@derek that’s probably good advice for anyone interaction with anyone else
@derek Keeping it zipped: a lifelong process of improvement on all fronts, for me anyway.
@derek I -say-, steeped in irony.
