To People From Twitter:
- Moderation can be extremely bad to non-existent on the bigger instances.
- Moderators are rarely paid and it's generally a volunteer position with little to no training.
- A lack of training and rules for moderators can lead to entire instances turning into a dumpster fire overnight.
- With the recent influx of new users, what was a huge problem before for moderation has become out of control. The mod to reports ratio balloons out of control.
Next up:
What to look for in a decent instance.
To find a good instance you need to look for certain things:
- Do they have limits on how many users can join the instance?
(This is in force to keep the mod to report ratio healthy).
- Do they have a dedicated team of mods? Who are they?
- Read their 'About' & 'Limited Servers' sections. Who are they blocking? What are they blocking for?
- How active is the instance? Despite being invite only or limiting registrations temporarily, is there a lot of activity?
There are a lot of instances out there that have little to no moderation by design. There are fascist instances. Crypto instances. You name it. Anyone can make a server. But it's up to the admin & mod team to make sure that you never see them.
@RadioAngel I haven't been able to figure out how to go about finding other instances. I'm wanting to find a smallish server for left-wing political chat, but I don't even know where to begin looking. I found my current server (which is great for my spiritual stuff) by accident.
@Kriselda Yeah. We need to need start publishing lists of good servers. ...
There's a few good leftist servers out there but the main one I know is the anarchist instance: kolektiva.social
@RadioAngel thanks, I'll take a look at them
@RadioAngel I love this list - what's the best way to find these things out about an instance?
(I'm v happy with .ie, but it's getting pretty big, so I'm considering finding something smaller)
@patsytheshark when you find an instance your curious about. Click the admin's profile. Sometimes you can find the moderators are followed by them. Other times the mods may be linked on the instances about page. Another fun thing you can do is click the explore option. This will bring up a page listing everyone on the instance with small profiles. Skimming this can give you a really good idea about what an instance supports.
@RadioAngel that's great info, thank you Siren
