In 2019, humanity collectively spent $563 billion (USD) on advertising. Millions of people devoted countless hours to creating gaudy banners to inconvenience people on the internet, and banal short videos for people to ignore while watching TV. All because some old guys in suits wanted 2% greater profit margins which they refuse to share with their workers.

In 2020, nature attempted to remind humanity of the futility in this kind of nonsense. Humanity has not yet understood this message.

37% of the money that paid for advertising in 2019, spent annually every year for 20 years, would eradicate hunger and extreme poverty from the world.

37% less of something which almost everyone despises, to improve the entire planet.

A better world for all people who live here is easily within our grasp. We're just collectively choosing not to reach for it.

More effort has been spent on preventing people from organizing over the last hundred years than on virtually anything else.

Religion was a successful organizing force because people could relate with it. Now there is nationalism which most European-occupied societies can't relate to, because there is no underlying concept to relate to.

What concept (not derived from ever-changing problems) can people relate to and get organized under?

Non profit organizations and social companies also use marketing but if there are better ways I'm interested.

Wouldn't a lot of people lose their jobs if businesses didn't find customers? It's not always about profit as far as I can see, many businesses can't pay salaries if they customers don't find them.

@JohanEmpa My point here is not, simply, advertising bad. My point is that it's a vast industry, on which humans collectively spend more money than most countries receive as their annual GDP. And it really shouldn't need to be.

Vast amounts of both time and money are being spent on things which are ultimately disposable.

Computers are very environmentally costly to manufacture (which I'm not sure recycling would do much to fix), but we're now putting them in everything! And replacing our phones each year! Because advertising!

I've long been doing everything I can in my own life to counter this...

The old answer was listing in directories and classified ads. There is a "cool instance" list and a couple other directory services for fedi, but the pattern is less popular than it used to be

This is independent of ad "providers" not needing user behaviour information for advertising, but collecting it anyway under that pretext.

I was recently thinking about the "Sponsored content" on news websites. It is actually honest if a person (or a bot!) took the time to describe why something is worth putting money in, and brands get to go into its title.

thanks for the reminder (this is not a sarcastic thanks) that my growing nostalgia for the way things were back in early spring, however ultimately misguided and wrong, was not baseless
