Cannabis is just another plant that can become an integral part of a permaculture.

Beans pull nitrogen out of the air to be used by nitrogen-hungry cannabis plants. Calendula is especially appealing to tiny pests who might otherwise be chomping on your cannabis. Stinging nettles add iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium to soil. And Chamomile (perhaps the best cannabis companion) can capture accumulated calcium, sulfur and potassium, which is delivered back to the soil as the plant breaks down.

Industrialized cannabis production, brought on by state legalization, has created vast monocultures that destroy the soil and waste electricity. Growing cannabis among a thriving permaculture is vital to the local ecology.

We are an ecology. Weed are an ecology.

Worth noting that both cannabis and nettle contain bast fibres which can be used in making textiles.

weed ecology

@InvaderXan @GreenandBlack It's going to be so cool when this plant is freed from state control / prohibition.

Instead of maximizing flower production, breeders will be able to focus on beautiful new plants. Plenty of bast, plenty of flower, and so many other things.

I've always thought they had very attractive leaves. It would be nice to see a few ornamental cultivars being bred!

weed ecology

@InvaderXan @Zuph @GreenandBlack yeah, I don't personally partake, but I definitely agree the leaves are so visually striking. Ornamental varieties would be wonderful.

Adding in, my understanding that is it's not related to pretty much anything else people grow, which makes it excellent in a crop rotation - the longer those go for, the better it is for the soil and the less risk there is of disease or pest buildup

@GreenandBlack

This is so interesting. I was just reading up on crop rotation and I'm really fascinated by it. Also I like weed so this is perfect

weed ecology

@GreenandBlack my neighbor plants calendula around her weed! She's an amazing grower.

weed ecology

@GreenandBlack also, IMO chamomile is a wonderful companion for almost any herbaceous plant. Everything seems to grow better when chamomile is around.

@GreenandBlack + all derivates (fabric, "rubber"...) that are Nice alternative to oil-based industry
