AWE are owned in partnership by the UK Government, Jacobs Engineering Group, Lockheed Martin UK, and Serco.

Join our protest bloc at Reading Pride this Saturday!! 10AM outside Civic Offices, Bridge Street, Reading, RG1 2LU

@OCRbot

No pride in AWE / No pride in police / No pride in the military industry. We successfully led a loud queer liberation bloc through the parade and then picketed the AWE stand at Reading Pride, even through the rain 鉁

This evening, merely hours after retweeting the Reading Refugee Support
Group and paying tribute to a late RRSG volunteer, Reading Pride have also
retweeted an announcement from the Ministry of Defence Police and the
鈥楢tomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) that the MoD Police and AWE will have
a stall at Pride. Yes, that MoD, and that AWE, the nuclear weapons developers.

These companies are some of the main causes of suffering for refugees
worldwide. Serco, who are paid to house refugees from the conflicts Serco
themselves fuel, are currently evicting asylum seekers from their homes in
Glasgow despite the fact their legal cases are stil ongoing and Serco have not,
been given permission by a court to proceed with evictions, Hundreds of
people face homelessness as a result. Serco have had to pay 拢3million to the
home office for repeated breaches of contract in i's housing of asylum seekers
in Northern Ireland and Glasgow. Serco also helps in the manufacture of
Tomado and Typhoon jets, both of which have been used by the Saudi
government to commit war crimes in Yemen and contribute to the ongoing
refugee crisis. Serco also hold significant contracts in the fields of border
policing, and provide electronic tags for asylum seekers.

鈥楢s Labour MP Paul Sweeney said: 鈥淭hat Serco seeks to profit from conflict
hile also earning income from the refugees displaced by those very conflicts
throws into sharp focus the mercenary exploitation of unscrupulous
capitalism鈥

鈥楽erco are also in the private prison business, with their prisons being among
the worst in the UK for conditions and inmate wellbeing. Serco also run the
Yart's Wood Immigration Removal Centre. Yarls Wood has seen an obscene
鈥榓mount of abuses against the people held there, including detainees being
locked in their cells when the Centre was on fire, the denial of medical
assistance to a detainee who died as a result, detainees being locked in an
airless corridor with no water or toilet facilities, numerous cases of racism,
sexual abuse, and violence from staff. In 2006, 70% of women at the facility
reported being raped. The UN's Special Rapporteur on Violence Against
Women, Rashida Manjoo, was barred entry to the facility when she went to
investigate in 2014
