The boat I work on once took out a charter of the board of an NYC area charity that works to get "minority" kids "outdoors" and this would help them gain the skills and confidence to "succeed". During the sail a young black man, an alumnus of the org's charity, gave a brief speech which he had been very obviously convinced and/or permitted to give, expressing his gratitude for the opportunities he had been given and told of how now he partook in rock climbing and kayaking. The donors were overjoyed, clapping, pleased that they were doing good.

I really wondered, would these people have clapped so heartily if the kid had said he wanted to be a farmer or fisherman?

I found it very interesting that the founder of the charity, in his speech, expressed a belief that the skills involved in outdoor recreation would help a person " succeed", particularly in business. I think he's wrong, but the fact that he thinks that is telling. The idea that the skills that one needs in the adversarial hierarchical world of business are somehow adjacent to the skills needed in outdoor recreation is not, to me, a good look.

The whole experience made me think a lot about how white people, particular more affluent ones, think about nature as a separate thing which one experiences on weekends, not as part of one's life and what an appropriate relationship to "nature" is.

Lotta air quotes in this story but that was the mood I was in when we did that sail. Would love to never take those people out again but we're an ed nonprofit so of course we must prostrate ourselves before anyone with money

@Awizadofearthsea I can live outside for weeks on end but somehow I'm not a billionaire?

white people environmentalism

@psilocyclin it's 'cause you don't own enough specialized gear, I bet. I bet if you buy a $1500 ultralight tent you'll be more successful

white people environmentalism

@psilocyclin I talk smack but I actually am lowkey a bit of a gear head...fucking love my Hennessey hammock

white people environmentalism

@Awizadofearthsea oh I'm a huge gearhead too. My desire for sweet kit outweighs my hatred of consumerism even, luckily I'm too poor to buy any more nice gear than I have right now.

@psilocyclin big mood. outdoor "recreation" is still getting the side eye from me, but I do like sleeping outdoors when the weather is right

@Awizadofearthsea yeah I really like making ultralight setups for people with like Walmart equipment. Gear doesn't have to be cutting edge or pricey to be good!

Got a related anecdote, but I'll put in on a separate thread if you prefer.
